Originally constructed in 1891 by the Austell Family, the city is named for General Alfred Austell — a merchant, banker, and financier who founded the Atlanta National Bank (later First Atlanta, then Wachovia, and eventually Wells Fargo).

Between 2016-2019, the Historic Austell House underwent an extensive roof-to-cellar restoration by Ducere Construction Services, master craftsmen specializing in historic preservation. Today, the building serves as a professional office building zoned commercial and residential, comprising over 6,300 sq ft (heated/cooled and unheated/uncooled spaces) with original heart-of-pine floors, five brick fireplaces, and Victorian architectural details meticulously preserved from the 1891 construction.
